Juniper Oil ( Juniper Berry Oil)

Juniper Oil, also called Juniper Berry Oil is a good balancing essential oil that has been used by our ancestors for thousands of years. It was used to ward off sickness, and Juniper branches were even used to ward off witches.

Juniper essential oil is very useful in natural skin care and is commonly used to treat cellulite but has proven to be useful in treating many other skin ailments.

Botanical Name: Juniper communis

Origin and Description: Juniper is native to just about everywhere in the northern hemisphere. It is a slower growing evergreen shrub that has blue-green needles, and berries that are produced from the female plant. Oil is mainly produced in Canada and Europe. In ancient times it was used to releive labor pains, fight infections and at one time was burned in hospitals because it was thought to clear the air of germs.

Part of Plant Used: Oil can be extracted from the berries, needles or wood of the juniper plant through steam distillation. Oil extracted from just the berries is much more superior and recommended over other juniper oils.

Aroma: Pleasant woody, peppery, pine scent.

Skin Care Uses and Benefits: Juniper Essential Oil has antibacterial, antiseptic, astringent and detoxifying properties. It is helpful in the treatment of acne, weeping eczema, dermatitus, acne and psoriasis. It balances oily skin and unclogs pores.

Juniper is now commonly used in cellulite treatments. It detoxifies and reduces water water retention. It can reduce puffiness and firm the appearance of skin.

Used in your bath it promotes circulation, helps with muscle fatigue, aids in reducing cellulite and believe it or not is even known to help with nasty hangovers. Be sure it is mixed with a suitable carrier oil. Full strength Juniper Essential Oil can burn and really irritate skin.

Juniper Essential Oil blends well these other essential oils: Geranium, Grapefruit, Lavender, Bergamot, Patchouli, Frankincense, Lime, Clary Sage, Rosemary and Lemongrass.

Cautions: Do not use if you are pregnant because this oil can stimulate the uterine muscles. Do not use if you have any kind of kidney problems. Use in moderation and never use full strength, always dilute with a suitable carrier oil. If in doubt always consult with your doctor first.
